Diego

Two minutes left. The scoreboard reads 45-38.

We’re leading, but barely. They currently have the ball. If they score a touchdown and get the extra point, they’ll tie us. They complete a two-point conversion, and they’ll be up by one. Almost every time we have the ball, we drive it down the field, and eventually score. Our only mistake was that field goal we got at the beginning of the first quarter, instead of a touchdown. During the third quarter, all they could manage was a field goal.

Our defensive line has held them well, but they’re fuckin’ good. It’s a high scoring game, lots of back and forth, lots of shit-talking out on the field. I just cursed out the asshole who took me down earlier, and he just smiled at me and told me he was going to fuck me up and good when the game was over.

Yeah, tonight the rivalry is pretty fucking strong between us. Nothing like what we’ve got going on with the Mustangs, who are our biggest high school rival, but we both want this win tonight. So we’re out for blood.

I’ve got streaks of it all over my uniform. Both from my own injuries and others. I’ve already cut my lip and there’s a scrape on my jaw. Pretty sure my ribs are gonna be all bruised up before this night is over, and I’ll be moving slow, but not right now.

I can’t afford to be slow.

I’m playing like I’m at war, locked in a battle where no one is going to get out alive. I know my teammates feel the same as I do. The tension is high. There’s not a lot of chatter or jokes tonight, not like usual. Not even from Caleb, who is the most light-hearted motherfucker on our team.

Our coach is wound so damn tight, I think his head is going to explode. Jake’s little brother Beck is on the sidelines, screaming at us like a miniature copy of his dad, and any other night, I would’ve found this hilarious.

But not tonight. Tonight I wish I could tell Beck to shut the fuck up. I wish I could tell everyone to shut the fuck up. I need to concentrate.

I glance toward the stands, spotting Jocelyn immediately. She’s already watching me, and I smile at her, which she returns. I found her in the crowd before the Star-Spangled Banner finished playing, and I’ve been looking at her every chance I get. She’s my good luck charm, and so far, she’s bringing me all the good vibes.

I need more. Just for those remaining minutes on the clock. They’re ticking by. We’re less than two minutes to go, and our defense is holding them, which is fucking amazing. Our defense has played like a bunch of superstars, and I cup my hands around my mouth, cheering for them.

Then I remember how distracted I am by everyone yelling for me tonight, and I shut the hell up.

I saw Mom in the crowd earlier, sitting with Aunt Lisa.
